Monday Evening Concerts:: GAY GUERILLA: A Portrait of Julius Eastman
January 24, 2017
4:00 AM
Zipper Hall, Colburn School
“What I am trying to achieve is to be what I am to the fullest...black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, a homosexual to the fullest.” ~ Julius Eastman
The classically-trained pianist, singer, dancer and composer Julius Eastman was one of the great musical polymaths of the 20th century. A black, gay musician in a field then overwhelmingly dominated by white men, Eastman's career was one of remarkable breadth and integrity. Throughout the 60s and 70s, he was a rising star of the avant-garde, active as a composer, teacher, and performer, earning a Grammy nomination for his recording of Peter Maxwell Davies' "Eight Songs for a Mad King." Plagued by demons of addiction, however, his career derailed in the 80s. During this period, he was evicted from his East Village apartment in New York for non-payment of rent and all his belongings, including his music, were thrown unceremoniously into the street, allowing his already-cryptic scores to be blown away into oblivion. This concert, which features one original score which remained intact (Crazy Nigger), and one reconstruction of an original score of Eastman's (The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc), pays homage to this provocative and neglected genius.

San Diego New Music: A California Score
October 22, 2016
2:30 AM
Athenaeum Music & Arts Library
San Diegans know drought—the persistent low rainfall of life near the desert and the recent drought to strike the western United States. And they also know to look to the skies for the deluge that will—that must—come. San Diego New Music's theme this year is "drought and deluge." Curators of each of the concerts this season will craft a musical vision of drought and deluge.
For this concert, flutist Rachel Beetz (joined by Kyle Blair, Jennifer Bewerse, and Dustin Donahue) presents an exploration the sounds of the dryness in San Diego while also remembering water. Along with sands, grains, and fire of drought in works by Natacha Diels, Kaija Saariaho, and a world premiere by Michael Pisaro, water, shells, and drops in works by John Cage and Peter Ablinger transform our instruments into the Californian landscape, ending in their absence in a presentation of Peter Ablinger's California Score, for 24 sheets of paper and objects.
Featuring:
ether - Natacha Diels
Cendres - Kaija Saariaho
Inlets - John Cage
Instruments & - Peter Ablinger
A California Score - Peter Ablinger
Grain Canons - Michael Pisaro

WISC: Fellows-in-Residence Concert and Conversation
September 27, 2016
11:30 PM
Acequia Madre House
Rachel Beetz and Jennifer Bewerse are Autoduplicity, an exploration of music for bodies and speech, our shared instruments. Their concerts investigate how these ordinary sounds can be transformed into powerful musical ideas reflective of the human experience. They began the Autoduplicity project to explore what would happen when the performer was separated from traditional instruments. From this separation, fundamental relationships between the performer, audience, body, and voice are revealed.
At the Women's International Study Center (WISC) residency this September, New Zealand composer Celeste Oram joins Autoduplicity. Over the course of their residency, they have collaborated on a new musical work for the duo exploring themes of multiplicity, identity of bodies with regard to musical instruments, sounds of centuries past, and alter egos. This new work will serve as the center of a full length concert reflecting on identity alongside pieces by Beetz, Bewerse, Bengt af Klintberg, and Taka Iimura.
Rachel, Jennifer, and Celeste will present their work at the Acequia Madre House Tuesday September 27, 2016 at 5:30pm.
