Dog Star 14: Frames

June 9, 2018

3:00 AM

Automata Theater

Autoduplicity (Jennifer Bewerse and Rachel Beetz) presents Clothing by Carolyn Chen Sanz cuer by Celeste Oram frame/frames by Cat Lamb.

This concert musically explores the idea of a frame. Throughout the performance, different forms of the frame emerge: the body as a structural frame, frames as thresholds for perceptual and physical transformation, and sonic frameworks that use pitch to create a lattice work of justly tuned harmonies.

Tickets: $18 / $15 student

Southland Ensemble: Byzantine Rites

June 3, 2018

3:00 AM

Automata Theater

Southland Ensemble concludes its 2017/18 season with the premiere of a new work by LA-based composer Laura Steenberge:   Byzantine Rites is a new collection of pieces in which chant-inspired musical textures accompany actions performed with household objects. The title speaks in part to the borrowing of fragments of medieval Byzantine chants to form the musical materials, and in part to the use of Byzantine to refer to unnecessarily complicated procedures.

This concert is presented in conjunction with the Dog Star 14th annual festival of experimental music.

Tickets: $18 / $15 student
